The Voice of America presents differing points of view on a wide
variety of issues. Next, an editorial expressing the policies of
the United States Government.
Voice:
Hungary recently became the second East European country to
join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development,
or O-E-C-D. The Czech Republic was admitted in February. And
Poland, with Europe's fastest growing economy, is expected to be
invited later this year.
The O-E-C-D is the successor to the agency that distributed
U.S. Marshall plan assistance to Europe in the years following
the Second World War. The Paris-based organization is a
multilateral forum in which member countries seek to develop
policy recommendations on a range of economic, scientific and
social issues. It aims to promote policies designed to achieve
the highest sustainable economic growth, employment, and standard
of living. The O-E-C-D also promotes sound economic expansion in
member and non-member countries and contributes to the expansion
of world trade.
About a dozen post-communist countries are cooperating with
the O-E-C-D. Many are seeking membership. Initially only the
U.S., Canada and Western European nations were members. Later,
Japan, Australia and New Zealand joined. Two years ago, Mexico
became a member.
Membership in the OECD represents a milestone in the process
of bringing former communist countries of Eastern Europe into the
community of democratic free-market nations. The Czech Republic,
Hungary and Poland have demonstrated an impressive effort to
liberalize their economies. The United States welcomes them as
new members of the O-E-C-D.
