A Working-group of the Hungarian Old-Scouts in Hamilton, Ontario
(Hunyadi Matya's Munkako~zo~sse'g or HMMK), have been
distributing good Hungarian history books to libraries all over
the world for years. Now they are embarked on a project, to put
some of these books on a CD. A number of us are helping to get
the electronic version of the following 10 books in shape to be
placed on a CD.

Author: Title Page

Lote, Louis I. ed: Transylvania and the Theory of Daco-Roman 112
Wagner, Frances S.: Toward a New Central Europe 322

Soon rough scanned copies of an other 10 books will be ready.
HMMK obtained the right to distribute these books in any form
they wish, including the Internet.

They would welcome any suggestion for a suitable Internet site
where these books could be uploaded, so those who are interested
could download them via FTP, GOPHER or some other WEB browser
program.

Please send your comments or suggestions to the list or to my e-
mail address. The HMMK has no internet access. BTW they could
also use some more volunteers to proofread scanned text.

Charles writes:

>I have a hard time beliving that "szia" and "szerbusz" are different >ways
>of saying the same thing. "Szia", I would venture to say, is slang, >or
>coloquialism of the English expression "See you.."

I would agree with you if I hadn't heard "szia" in the winter of 1956 in
Austria in the refugee student camp I was staying. English/American culture
simply didn't penetrate Rakosi's Hungary--we were terribly cut off. Our
language skills were wanting because only Russian was taught in school and
for some "strange" reason, no one learned Russian well enough to be able to
say two words to the Russian soldiers in October 1956. English as a foreign
language was not preeminent between the two world wars and after. Very few
people were able to speak or even read English. Most people knew German best
because before 1948 it was taught for eight years in gymnasium. Their Latin
was pretty good too: also eight years of it. And they had a smattering of
Greek because they learned four years of Greek in high school. In the
so-called Realgymnasiums instead of Latin and Greek they taught a second
modern language, normally French, for four years. No English-speaking
tourists could be found on the streets of Budapest. Therefore, it is hard to
imagine that it is a direct borrowing.

If I hadn't heard the word in 1956-57 and if it became prevalent only, let's
say, in the 1980s I would be also sure that it is a misunderstood English
word.

+ - Film/video inquiry (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

I'm teaching a course this fall on Hungarian music -- including some
popular culture topics. I'm wondering if the following film material
might be available from among the _Hungary_ or _Forum_ readership:
1. Good footage of a
Translvanian wedding. 2. Local nativity/shepherd's play productions, 3.
Old films starring Katalin Karady 4. Any nepszinmuvek.
Thank you.
