I don't read the Hungarian language FORUM but you once mentioned that most
of the contributors to it live in the United States. If they believe what
you say they believe then the only thing I can add is that they have a blind
faith in conspiracy theories. And once they believe in a conspiracy there's
never a shortage of 'evidence'.

Just to digress slightly from the Revolution vs Rebellion (or whatever)
discussion, I'm puzzled by these claims that Hungary was no longer
responsible to Moscow and removed from the Soviet orbit. Then why was
Hungary still a member of the Warsaw Pact and what were thousands of
Soviet troops still doing in Hungary, all until the recent break-up of
the USSR? Hungary may have had more say in her own internal affairs after
'56 (and, yes, increasingly so as time wore on) but isn't it going too
far to state categorically that 1 and 3 above were true soon after '56?
The '56 uprising (that's how it's often been called in the British media,
but please feel free to argue its validity) no doubt had far reaching
consequences for both Hungary and the whole Soviet bloc, as did many
other happenings elsewhere, but the effects of all these things were
subtle and only gradually accumulative...

Thank you for your enlightening comments, Eva.
We are then, faced with an old dilemma. On one hand, as a nation, we must
maintain some degree of historical integrity, or conservatism, if you will.
On the other hand, however, progress and renewal of a nation are essential
for its survival. I am clearly of the mindset favouring more heavily the
side of renewal, which would, in my mind, favour at least rethinking the
coat-of-arms issue. Hungary is not the same nation as it was in medieval
times, and conditions in which our nationhood exists have changed
drastically since then, favouring such renewal. However, to maintain
cohesion we must maintain links to our common past, which was well
illustrated within your posting. I'll have to do some more thinking on
this.
A symbol that unites us as a nation better than the coat-of-arms with
crown, is, perhaps, the star of Green Acres herself, Zsa Zsa Gabor. I vote
that the forint should henceforth be emblazoned with the silhouette of Zsa
Zsa, and the centre of the Magyar flag be blessed with the sequin-wearing
policeman-slapping wonder that is Hungary's greatest export. :-)

nope... Sven's my first name (Szven magyarul) and Koppany's my last name.
on occasion i'll use my mother's maiden name which is Stjarnlof. my
mother's from Sweden (semi-religious Finnish Orthodox Christian persuasion)
and my father's Hungarian (out and proud Jew). Sven is a very common
Swedish name, and as far as Koppany, no one in my family has a clue where
that came from. We don't believe ourselves descendants of Koppany, but
rather that that name was adopted in his honour a few hundred years back.
you see, sugarlump, following common trends has never been a strongpoint in
my family. what about you.. is your name real?

Imre Nagy declared Hungary neutral and no longer member of the Warsaw Pact. He
also negotiated the withdrawal of the soviet troops.

Actually, brownsugar, my real name is "Wicked Witch of the West". But some
days ago, I ran into a faerie, who felt that a sweeter and more
condescending touch might be in order - as such, granted me the use of
Aniko. As for Dunford, well, passion fruit pie, I inherited that one by
getting married - traditional ha?

no, but i did see some of said reincarnates wearing faux pearl/blue sequin
dresses at Dollywood for the annual Silicon-Jamboree. i've always admired
anyone who can run down a cobblestone street in 10 inch heels after a train
while reciting a monologue and still not get a severe run. that's what
Pagan Magyars specialise in.

LOL!! :) well i'm about fixin' to testify! :)
actually, according to the Dead Sea Scrolls, the drapes were "hung" by
Bruce, the Temple Maid. Bruce was eventually fired from King David's
service, however, for appearing before the King wearing last year's
double-knit poly-Esther tunic, accentuated by eye-shadow that was two
shades shy of the colour coordination of a Denver Broncos linebacker.
Bruce was replaced by Clarence, who was in Israel on vacation from Greece,
where he had worked for years as a cosmetologist under Plato (remember
Plato's quote: "know thy self, know thy skin tones). Clarence saw how much
work the Temple needed, and so sacrificed the remainder of his years
securing the perfect floral motifs and track-torch lighting for the place.
The new pleasure to be found in the Temple inspired King David in his
multiple military victories, bringing Israel victory through good taste.
shalom.

No sugarplum, you need to go back to your history books to get a tad more
enlightened about Pagan Magyars... although, on second thought, it does seem
like your mind has absorbed some minute things....btw .... you did look
smashing, if I may say so, in that faux pear/blue sequin ... but the shoes,
dear boy... well, I just hate to tell you just did not match the 'mood' of

TTssst, ttstts, ttssttt... don't tell Mama you're slipping....(she'll be
disappointed for sure) passion fruit pie was burried in there too, you know?
As well, Mama would be so stressed to realize, that you're in the wrong

I see what you mean (in the context of trying to justify Nagy's short-
lived *regime* in Budapest as the result of a *revolution*) although
many might perhaps argue that quite the opposite was actually achieved.
Anyway, thanks for the clarification.
