Andras Kornai chastises me for neglecting to give the whole background to the
socialists' decision to use to media in order to force Lajos Fu2r, former
minister of defense, to have a meeting with his successor, Gyo2rgy Keleti.

First of all, I would not draw far-reaching conclusions about Lajos Fu2r's
state of mind:

Andras comments thus:

>Can a "depressed" and "upset" minister go against the clear wishes of his
PM?
>Can he, perhaps, next time he gets depressed and upset, order troops to
>attack a neighboring country? Is this kind of person fit for such a crucial
>post as Defense? What is going on?. . . .
>Having a loose cannon
>in a ministry, not accepting the policies of the outgoing PM, and not
>accepting the policies of the incoming PM, would be a serious matter even
>less sensitive fields, inasmuch as it establishes the wrong tradition for
>rotating positions. But in Defense this is not only harmful, it is actually
>dangerous.

My background material comes from the same article the quotation is coming
from and the accompanying picture shows a very jolly Fu2r with a very jolly
Keleti shaking hands and laughing heartily. So, I would be cautious in
interpreting his refusal to meet with Keleti as a result of deep depression,
as Laszlo Juszt, the journalist, claims. It may be no more than unfounded
gossip.

Andras is quite right that Boross promised a very smooth transition and
obviously Fu2r was not following his prime minister's orders. But I think
that that is irrelevant. What is relevant that a member of the media writes
about this episode so matter of factly that one gets the impression that such
things happen quite often and the journalists don't think anything of such
practices. Eva Balogh

Too bad about the Expo but I think George Antony is right about the
notoriously losing propositions of such events. And if you read the last
couple of news items from Radio Free Europe on the state of Hungary's
finances, I am afraid there isn't much else to do but to cancel it. However,
the opposition is upset over this and other decisions because they had not
been discussed in parliament. At the moment there is summer recess for the
house. Eva Balogh

May be Michael heard that in Hungary sexual intercourse between consenting
partners is legal from the age 14 (For those of you, who thinks it is
still 16, please check your info rather then writing flame letters).

So, is it final that the EXPO will be cancelled ? If not, when will the faith
of it be decided ? (not like they have much time to think about it, '96 is
just around the corner...)

Dido, Papa Smurf. The US National Guard is a tremendously valuable
organization. They have expertise in many support an supply
fields, such as large scale transport of material (food, medicine,
shelter, mobile hospitals, consctruction equipment, sato2bi, sato2bi),
and have many times come to the aid of American civilians (Florida
huricane, midwest flood), and supported the regular US army (Desert
Storm, Somalia). The US army actually counts on the Guard in case of
conflict and emergency, since the army does not maintain the quantity
of support units it expects to use when needed. They actually count
on the preparedness of the Guard, and for the Guard to get involved.
They are not a "silly" organization, and they do not have "silly"
exercises.

I have read about a problem American Jews are having, in that many Jews are
marrying non-Jews. Since the American Jewsih population is small to
begin with, the results are serious. I think I heard that something like
30% of Jews marry non-Jews, and the children are raised in neither faith.

Do you see this as a problem? What do you think abouth the prospect of
the disappearance of American Jews due to this development?

Pauol
Paul, that is.

during my life, I have come across personally or had heard stories or
memorable Hungarian characters. My impressions of us folks is, we're
kinda strange!! Though every group has it's wierdos, the wierd gene
seems to be a Hungarian feature, ie. a friend told me about a Hungarian
man in his 40s who immigrated to the US in the 1950s. After some time
here, he quit his job to make a motorcycle tour around the US, just to
see the place. That is strange for a man in his 40s - I think that may
be the cigany gene.

I think this is a problem with being American, melting pot & all that...

Personally, this is not a problem for me (from the religious point of view)
because I believe that only adults can make substantive decisions regarding
faith, and I do not believe in hammering religion into one's children. On the
other hand, I am deeply interested in issues regarding spirituality, and we
take it upon ourselves to look into a number of religious philosophies in the
hope of practicing some kind of spiritual activity. I consider most organized
religious bodies much too corrupt and conservitive for my taste. Whenever I
sense that somebody is trying to keep me in line, my organ of ridicule
immediately begins to act up. I am much too suspicious of the shady connections
between government, clergy & big business to get too close to any of the above.
Anyone who suffered the occupation governments in E. Europe during the past 40
years should know whereof I speak.

As for the disappearance of the American Jewish community, I see no evidence
of it. I follow the community's activities in publications such as the
_Baltimore Jewish Times_, and they seem strong anough to me. In any case, I
have no wish to play a numbers game. That's just the kind of statements that
are used to keep heretics like me in line. I'm outta here.

You better fork up about $650 for a plane ticket to Budapest, Paul. The famous
non-stop deli is in Buda, near Moszkva te'r, near the Fe'ny utca market, near
the corner of Filler utca and Fe'ny utca. Otherwise, you'll have to get me
to have you over for dinner.
